Welcome! this is Ghost_nappa here with my first of what I am dubbing a "thread Blog". You probably cmae to this thread becasue you asked your self "What the heck is FOG?". Well, there is an easy way for me to answer your question: http://www.fieldofglory.com/introduction.html My expirenece so far This game is not for the faint of heart, but it is much cheeper than many other wargames that I ahve seen. It seems to have a steep learning curve. But I think this is becasue the rules are very "tight" Menaing that there is a rule for everything. I really like this game and I think that I will enjoy teaching it to otheres who Like Acient to medieval history and want to see if they can command better that the best and have chinese fight romans or Masidoinas fight late middle ages spainsh. Todays Disscusion: Mid Republican Romans So, Romans. These guys are all about foot; and their foot is some of the best in the game. This list is diffrent in the fact that you have to take your foot in "legions". Each leagion has a set number of types of units that can be in it. This limits the power of the battle group as in you can't max out on one thing. But it gives all of the battle groups the ablity to be usefull in any situtation. The cavalry that the romans have as core troops are very poor. They have only light spear/ and swordsmen. These two ablities are not near as good as Lancer/ swordsmen because they can't help your foot except by scaring off light foot. This list has the ablity to down grade and upgrade your legions is an intresting option but I would only upgrade. Wehn you look at the allies of this they are what give this list the flexiblity it needs to surive out of period. But it is hugely limited in numbers. The kinght and lance based horse is the bane of foot list like this that don't have much spear capablity. Strengths: core troops are drilled ( better at mauvering and responding to enemies moves) access to a large amount of superior and elite troop options. lots of small battle groups make it easyer to move around and increase your overall break limit very strong when played to its strengths and the opponet plays along weakness the hastati and principes do not have the skilled swordsmen POA (makes them better in melee) lots of small battle groups that could be wiped out easily very little shooting or cavalry one dimentional army in general very limited allies Sample army list c-in-c troop commander troop commander field commander field commander 1hastati/principes HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen 8 2hastati/principes HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen 8 3triarii HF Armoured Superior Drilled Offensive Spearmen 4 4velites LF Unprotected Average Drilled Javelins Light Spear 8 5hastati/principes HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen 8 6hastati/principes HF Armoured Average Drilled Impact Foot Swordsmen 8 7 triarii HF Armoured Superior Drilled Offensive Spearmen 4 8velites LF Unprotected Average Drilled Javelins Light Spear 8 9 cavalry CV Armoured Average Undrilled Light spear Swordsmen 4 10cavalry CV Armoured Average Undrilled Light spear Swordsmen 4 11cretan archers LF Unprotected Superior Drilled Bow 6 This is a very basic 800 point army list. General Tactics This list is a very begginer friendly list. You put the cavalry on the wings to protect your flanks, the legions in the middle and the cretan archers in front to try to ward away their skirmishers. The hard part comes with teh general infantry advance. One must try to get flank charges with this list becsue you don't have a lot of bases but they are spread out in a large amound of battle groups os use that advantage to flank. closing Well I hope that you readers have found iths first "episode" intresting. If you are wondering I can't really teach you how to play in this "blog" but I will talk about taicts and such. If you would like to learn more about the mid-republican romans wiki saves the day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Republic "Americans love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle. Today's Topic Light horse Light horse are the lightly armed raiders of the acient/ medieval age. To be usefull in my opnion they must have bows. Altho generally they probably won't do much damage with their bow, think as any distruption as bonous. Really their use is to "march block" the opponet and try to get his shock troops to chase them around the table. Because a battle group must react to an opponents battle group with in 2 inches you can force the oponetto move in a cretian way while not risking your light horse because they can evade and are fast. The general conceus between players is that lone of the best uses of Light horse is to lead your opponets knights around the table on a wild goose chase their-by removing them from the battle proper. But as a note of caution, archers like picking on Light horse if the light horse have short range weapons. Finally as to list construction; the Light horse is very cheep so they are very good for padding your battle group count and taking up table space so you can slow down an on table flanking manuver. Well its been a long time but I'm back with another FOG post.
Today I want to tuch on something that I just encountered in my second game of FOG. It was later Polish vers my nikopherain (ps?) byzantines. The ploes won handlidy becasue of a solid plan, and the tech advantage. This brings up the question, how much is the tech advantage? It seems taht when the Knights have a + in impact and mellee vs. almost half of may army I am servelry hamstringed. It seems taht logically the more advanced tech will be better that the older tech but in our open gaming group will there be a race to the battom? By this I mean that only the most recent lst or the best units will be used? This is wahat is called Metagaming. And I do it a lot. Really I am going to take pikes over swordsmen any dday becasuse they are just beter. Also I would take Knights over normal lancers any day. The biggest problem that I see in my FOG group is the fact that we have a very large dictomy of players. 2 have no wargaming expierence : and will most lickley play historicall "pure". One played 40k and just wants something else. and one played FOw and is more concerned with "power gaming" than historical accuracy. A power gammer is someone who will take the best options, and plays to win. And I think that in my gaming group Fog could die very rapidlly becasue of slow play and the sharp learning curve becasue if you don't play pperflectly aginst some force you have no chance of winning. But we will see how our meta game evolves as the two other playres get their armies on line and our meta game picks up. but While that happens I will be tryiing to berak down FOG and try to pull out a win. see ya next time! To come back to this thread; Field of Glory Renaissance is going to come out next month. I believe I will be doing a "from scratch" tactics tailing off of this thread. So we will have to wait until next month to see what comes.
